Mother's Day in the Philippines is more than simply impressive cards and expensive gifts. It's a beautiful day to celebrate our amazing mothers, grandmothers (lolas), godmothers (ninangs), and aunts (titas). But actually, every day is an opportunity to express how much we value them. On Mother's Day, however, the entire family gathers to tell stories, laugh, and, of course, have a delicious lunch together.
What is the best part? A large family feast! Filipino families prepare all of their favorite delicious foods, including pancit (those yummy stir-fried noodles), sinigang (the sour soup everyone enjoys), and crispy fried chicken. It's a way to show Mom how much we care by preparing all of her favorite meals and sharing a warm a meal together.
Flowers are lovely, but Filipinos prefer to give presents that are really special. We often make "money bouquets" out of bills, which we name "pampapera." It's a great way to show Mom how much we appreciate everything she does for us. We also enjoy crafting cards for Mom and writing words to express how much we adore her.
Respect is highly valued in Filipino households, especially on Mother's Day. To show our respect for Mom, we can welcome her with a "mano po" (a gentle touch of her hand to our forehead). We might even take over her chores for the day so she can unwind and enjoy her special occasion. It's all about expressing our gratitude to Mom not just on Mother's Day, but every day of the year.
So, why not celebrate Mother's Day in the Filipino style this year? Get your family together, cook some delicious food, and show the mothers in your life how much you love and appreciate them!
