Community-based research (CBR) is a technique that goes beyond just obtaining information. It is about forming partnerships and empowering the communities we study. This collaborative approach is important for a variety of reasons. Due to several constraints, our research used a secondary data-based strategy rather than direct interaction with community members, as is traditional for CBR. However, the core idea of comprehending the community and its surroundings remains at the center of our efforts.
- Local Knowledge Informs Our Inquiry: While we do not collect data directly from locals, CBR recognizes that communities are rich sources of information about their environment, history, and challenges. Our study design reflects this by drawing on secondary sources developed by and for the Bantay community, such as municipal websites and local publications. This enables us to draw on local knowledge, enhancing our knowledge of Bantay's physical geography and geology.
- Empowering the Community Through Knowledge: CBR transforms communities from study subjects to active participants. While our study does not require direct participation, the knowledge gained from our research can still benefit the community. By sharing our findings with local government officials and communities, we intend to contribute to a better understanding of Bantay's distinct landscape, which will be useful for future planning and development projects.
- Sustainable Solutions Rooted in Local Context: By utilizing secondary sources built with the community in mind, we hope to get insights that are relevant to the local context. This knowledge is then applied to the development of culturally suitable and long-term sustainable solutions.
In our situation, we looked for to understand Bantay's physical geography and geology not just from the point of view of science, but also how these aspects affect the lives of Bantay residents.

| With this map as our guidance, we're on track for completion in our CBR research in Bantay, Ilocos Sur. This graphic representation helps us focus on attaining our objectives. |
Our research focuses on Bantay's physical geography. We studied the interaction of rolling hills, huge plains, and the mighty Abra River, which runs through town. We also looked at the underlying geological formations that have influenced Bantay's landscape over time.
Even though our research was based on secondary sources, the journey of discovery was as thrilling! We were quite excited to digitally visit Bantay and learn about its unique geological makeup and landforms. Our research was made possible by the abundance of material available through internet tools and publications, and it was interesting to observe how the community documented and presented its surroundings.
